Elena Baltacha, whose father Sergei, won bronze with the Soviet Union football team at the Moscow Olympics in 1980, was at the forefront of British women’s tennis for over a decade.

Elena lost at Wimbledon in the second round in 2012 to then defending champion Petra Kvitova, the same year in which she reached the second round on her Olympics debut in London.

She retired from tennis in November 2013, two months before being diagnosed with liver cancer, and she eventually passed away in May 2014 aged just 30.
