What is curling's newest competition: The 2026 Rock League

Allegiances will be tested and stones will be turned; the inaugural curling Rock League has arrived.

The first professional curling league kicks off this week with plenty of Scottish Olympians taking to the ice.

Across six mixed-gender franchises, the athletes will be split up to represent their continents in what promises to be one of the most exciting shakeups in the sport.

Simply put, teammates turn rivals and drama will ensue.

“It is a really exciting prospect, it is going to be very competitive,” said Grant Hardie.

“Playing against the boys you have played with for nine years will be different and interesting, a new challenge."

How does the Rock League work?

The first instalment of the event takes place in Toronto, Canada this week, tapping into a raucous culture of curling in the country.

There are six franchises involved - two from Europe, two from Canada, one from the USA and one from Asia - with each franchise having a squad of five men and five women.

The teams will compete against each other in a round robin format that includes a men's match, women's match and mixed doubles, with all three happening at the same time.

There will also be a debut for the mixed fours. The newest competition format, that is not standard at the Olympics, each franchise will send out two teams to compete on the sixth day of competition.

The top four teams from the standings after the mixed fours will advance to the play-offs, with the inaugural Rock League champions crowned on Sunday.

Which British Olympians are involved?

Six British Olympians and one world champion bronze medallist will take to the ice in Toronto, across five of the franchises.

Northern United - Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds are arm-in-arm once more as the childhood friends and Olympic duo team up for Northern Shield. Two-time silver medallist Mouat will skip the side, with recently crowned world bronze medallist Robin Brydone joining the fray.

Alpine Curling Club - Before even stepping onto the ice, Alpine Curling Club have a strong leader at the helm in Eve Muirhead. The Olympic champion from 2022 and 2026 Chef de Mission is the general manager of the side which sees Hammy McMillan Jr take to the ice.

Maple United - Ross Whyte is straight back at it after recently steering his side to a maiden world medal. The Beijing 2022 reserve for Team Mouat soared to his own glory in Ohio at the start of the month with world bronze and will now join the Canadian Rock League side.

Frontier Curling Club - The US franchise will hold a piece of Scotland in its ranks as Grant Hardie joins the crew. The third member of Team Mouat will be skipped by USA's Korey Dropkin who won mixed doubles silver at Milano Cortina 2026.

Typhoon Curling Club - The fourth member of Team Mouat, Bobby Lammie, will suit up for the Asian franchise Typhoon Curling Club. It will bring the incredible opportunity for Lammie to play side-by-side with his girlfriend Seol Ye-eun of South Korea.

Shield Curling Club - Skipped by Canada's Brad Jacobs, whose rink won gold at Milano Cortina 2026, this is the only franchise that does not have Scottish involvement.

Where can I watch?

The semi-finals and finals of the Rock League will be show live on the BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app next Sunday.
