Weston slides to success in Lake Placid

Matt Weston slid to his first World Cup gold of the season with a brilliant performance in Lake Placid.

The 25-year-old stopped the clock in a combined time of 1:48.16 to seal the victory over Germany's Christopher Grotheer and South Korea's Seunggi Jung.

The triumph continues to a superb start to the World Cup season for British sliders, with two victories out of a possible three, while Marcus Wyatt narrowly missed out on joining his compatriot on the podium in fourth.

Weston ended Great Britain’s 14-year wait for a men’s skeleton World Cup gold in November 2021 and set himself up for his latest triumph with a stellar first run which saw him top the table in a time of 53.74, the only slider to dip below 54 seconds.

The 2022 Olympian was 0.16 seconds clear of Grotheer overall, with the fastest start time of the second run.

"It's the perfect way to end 2022," Weston said.

"Winning races is the ultimate aim and I'm really happy to have a gold on my own, rather than sharing it like it did with the three-way tie last season!

"I'm gutted for Marcus to just slip out of the medals - it would have been great to have two of us on the podium again like in Whistler.

"The team's in a great place. Everything's coming together and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do for the rest of the season."

Wyatt was in second place heading into the second run but was unable to hold onto a podium position, denying him a third medal in as many outings this season.

The 31-year-old now sits third in the overall standings leading into the next event on January 6.

Weston was not the only success story of the day, with reigning snowboard cross world champion Charlotte Bankes earning her first World Cup podium of the new season with a brilliant bronze in Italy.

Bankes finished behind Chloe Trespeuch and Manon Petit Lenoir in Cervinia, the former leading a French one-two while Bankes edged out Australia's Belle Brockhoff for bronze.

Bankes was top qualifier in the first World Cup event of the season in France earlier this month but missed out on the second day of racing due to illness.

Her return to the slopes at Cervinia saw the 27-year-old claim a 16th World Cup podium as she looks to retain her snowboard cross World Cup title, which she earned with five victories from eight races last time out.
