Tom Daley has announced his return to diving with eyes on an unprecedented fifth Olympic Games at Paris 2024.
The 29-year-old won gold in the 10m platform synchro alongside teammate Matty Lee in Tokyo but hasn't jumped off the diving board since, entering into a two-year unofficial retirement.
But after a fated visit to the Olympic City of Colorado Springs, the birthplace of his second son Phoenix, the diving sensation was shocked to find himself yearning for the sport once more.
And a comment from his eldest son Robbie was just the inspiration he needed to return to the pool.
"I just thought, if this isn't fate then what is it," said the three-time world champion.
"We had the best time at time at the Olympic and Paralympic Museum, we had a running race and tried a bunch of different sports.
"At the end we went into a room to watch this video with all these Olympic moments about what it means to be an athlete and see those inspirational and motivational journeys.
"I sat there with Robbie, the video started, and I just wept. I couldn't control myself; it was like I hadn't grieved diving.
"I hadn't been doing it anymore and in theory I had retired and couldn't imagine going back to doing it again.
"Coming out of that museum something changed in me.
"I'm not ready to be done and I don't think I was ready to be done and hang up my trunks and move on with that part of my life.
"Especially when my son Robbie said 'Papa I want to see you dive at the Olympics'.
"That has lit a new flame and fire inside me to see where this goes."
Tom Daley erupted onto the Olympic stage at just 14 years old in Beijing 2008 and has since claimed a staggering 18 medals across Olympic Games, World and European championships, including nine golds.
Known for his roles in publicly campaigning for LGBTQ+ rights and his incredible knitting skills, a spot at Paris 2024 would see Daley become the first British diver to compete at five Olympic Games.
With a quota spot at Paris 2024 still needed for the men's 10m platform synchro, the diver’s return to competition will most probably be the World Championships selection event later this year, ahead of the Doha World Championships in February 2024.
But if anything, his return is a chance to show his sons the importance of doing something you love.
"Paris 2024 is definitely a goal," he said.
"I don't know where this is going to go. I don't know what this is going to look like.
"You never say never and this next period of time for me is about enjoying myself and setting an example to Robbie and Phoenix about working hard at something you love."
