Team Muirhead win first curling gold for 20 years

Eve Muirhead skipped Great Britain's fab four to fairytale Olympic curling gold with a 10-3 victory over Japan.

Muirhead, Vicky Wright, Jennifer Dodds and Hailey Duff soared to victory with an end to spare at the Ice Cube.

They won Team GB's first gold medal on the final day of Beijing 2022, the fourth successive Games at which Britain have struck gold.

The quartet's towering triumph is Team GB's first Olympic curling title in 20 years, since Rhona Martin threw down the 'Stone of Destiny' in Salt Lake City.

Muirhead has been crowned Olympic champion at the fourth attempt, expertly guiding three debutants through troubled waters to the top of the podium.

"It's a dream come true," said Muirhead.

"For the rest of the girls as well, it's been a journey to get here to say the least. To come out on top and show our fight, it showed how strong we are.

"It's a moment I'm never going to forget and I'm sure we'll enjoy the next few hours.

"It's a moment I've dreamt of for so many years. That was my third semi-final a couple of days ago and they were hard. I bounced back, I got the shoes back on and we're Olympic champions. What a five we are and it's such a special, special moment."

They dominated the gold medal match from the start, scoring two with use of the hammer in the opening end.

The quartet stole one in the fifth end and restricted Japanese scoring, overwhelming the 2018 bronze medallists with a score of four in the eighth.

It was revenge for Muirhead who lost the bronze medal match in PyeongChang on the final stone and became the first British curler to win a second Olympic medal after she took bronze at Sochi 2014.
