Team Mouat into men's curling semi-finals

Team GB will have at least one more curling medal match in Cortina after Bruce Mouat’s rink qualified for the semi-finals in nervous fashion.

Mouat, Grant Hardie, Hammy McMillan Jr and Bobby Lammie finished their round-robin campaign on Wednesday and faced an anxious wait on Thursday morning, while rivals Italy and Norway played their final matches.

Team GB needed just one team to lose and Switzerland, the top seeds, did them a favour by beating the host nation with an end to spare.

On the other rink, Norway beat Canada to book their spot in the last four.

It means Mouat’s world champions will be in action tonight against the Swiss, with qualification for the gold medal match on the line. The loser will play for bronze on Friday.

Team GB were narrowly beaten in an extra end by Switzerland on Sunday, and later said they would love to see them in the knock-outs. Now, they will.

Mouat steered Team GB to a brilliant 9-2 victory against USA yesterday and is eyeing a late medal charge, much like Eve Muirhead delivered four years ago.

Muirhead’s team won two of their last three round-robin matches to qualify for the semi-finals with a 5-4 record before going to win the gold.

He has also been on the opposite side in the mixed doubles in this Olympic Winter Games. Mouat and Jen Dodds qualified for the semi-finals as top seeds but were beaten by Sweden in the last four.

“If we do qualify tomorrow, we'll go into the semis in a great state of mind,” Mouat said last night.

“The opposite happened for me in the mixed doubles. So, it's time for us to go 5-4 and then hopefully win a gold.”

Team GB’s women’s squad are also hoping to make the semi-finals this afternoon.

They play Italy in their last game of the round-robin stage and must win to have any hope of progressing, and then hope other results go their way.
