Explained: What is a quota place?
Simply put, a quota place is a country’s ticket to the Olympics.
A quota place guarantees that an athlete from a given country - not necessarily the athlete who earned it - will be competing in that Olympic event.
In most sports, the athlete who wins the quota place is not guaranteed to represent Team GB at the Olympics.
They have to be selected subsequently by the national governing body in their sport, a selection that is ratified by Team GB. That is when their Olympic dreams come true!
Explained: How are quota places given out?
This varies depending on the sport.
Some are given out based on performances at selected events - for example, the 2023 European Games or the 2023 Canoe Slalom World Championships in London.
Others, like cycling and skateboarding, are based on world rankings that accumulate through a qualification window that closes in the Olympic year.
World Athletics and World Swimming set qualification standards for each event, which decide the destination of quota places, and remaining athletes invited based on rankings.
Selected key dates - 2024
Aquatics World Championships: 2-18 February, Doha
Athletics: World Indoor Championships: 1-3 March, Glasgow
Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournaments: 29 February - 12 March, Italy and 23 May - 5 June, Bangkok
Artistic Gymnastics European Championships, Rimini: Men 24-28 April, Women 2-5 May
Olympic Qualifier Series (BMX freestyle, breaking, skateboarding and sport climbing): 16-19 May, Shanghai and 20-23 June, Budapest
