Team GB’s men’s rugby sevens side advanced Olympic semi-finals following a dramatic 5-0 win over Argentina that came courtesy of a last-gasp try in extra time.
The score was astonishingly still at 0-0 and the end of normal time despite both teams having players sin-binned and Argentina missing what would have been a match-winning penalty in stoppage time.
It meant sudden death where the first point claims victory and Team GB captain almost won it with a penalty but it agonisingly hit the post.
It was a miss the didn’t prove costly as Team GB’s Dan Bibby, the outstanding player of the match, blasted through the tired Argentinian defence to give his side a place in the last four against South Africa.
“I’ve never played a game of sevens like that,” said Bibby.
“I’ve played for three or four years now and I’ve never been in a 0-0 draw at full time.
“It was very surreal, especially with two missed kicks at goal.
“It was absolutely amazing and fair play to Argentina.
“They stuck at it and worked us hard.
“We just kept our composure and ended up getting that crucial score so I’m very proud of the boys.”
South Africa poses a stern test for Team GB next but Bibby says they players are ready for anything.
“We take each game as it comes no matter who we are playing,” said the 25 year old from Wigan.
“We have shown real Team GB spirit and regardless of where we are from, we have become a really tight unit.
“We have only been together ten weeks and we fought hard for each other in those final few minutes.
“That is what a true team is all about and it is great to be part of.
“For people watching all around the world, if that didn’t know what sevens is all about, they will do now and they will realise what a fantastic, exiting game it really is.”
The win marked a fantastic day for Team GB as they earlier claimed an exciting 21-19 win over New Zealand in their final group match to remain unbeaten through the tournament.
