Team GB’s Olympians will prepare for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in the world-class surroundings of Stanford University, after the British Olympic Association (BOA) secured the California campus as its exclusive preparation camp.
In support of the United States and California’s hosting of the 2028 Olympics, Stanford will provide Team GB with access to its athletic facilities on campus, for acclimatisation, training and performance purposes.
The agreement will allow around 300 Olympic athletes from Great Britain and Northern Ireland to train prior to, and during, the Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles, California from 14-30 July 2028.
Team GB’s access agreement includes the use of specific facilities for the following sports:
Archery
Athletics
Aquatics (swimming, diving & water polo)
Badminton
Boxing
Cricket
Fencing
Football
Gymnastics
Hockey
Judo
Lacrosse
Rugby 7s
Squash
Table Tennis
Weightlifting
However, all of Team GB’s sports and athletes will be able to utilise the facilities for acclimatisation and performance training ahead of the Games.
“Stanford has a long and cherished history of producing Olympic athletes,” said Bernard Muir, Stanford’s Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics. “We have always championed the belief in the power of athletics to inspire greatness as our student-athletes prepare to become global leaders. After consulting with the USOPC, we are excited to open our athletic facilities to Team GB as they prepare for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. We look forward to hosting Great Britain’s world class athletes on The Farm and sharing our commitment to excellence with even more Olympians.”
Team GB CEO, Andy Anson, said: “We pride ourselves in providing the best possible preparation for our athletes at the Olympic Games and in securing Stanford University’s facilities I can quite honestly say that we will have access to the very best preparation camp facilities that Team GB could wish to have in the United States.
“The co-operation with Stanford has been excellent throughout, and we are thrilled to be partnering with one of the world’s most prestigious universities, ahead of what will be an iconic Olympic Games, just as it was in 1984.”
Stanford is an athletics powerhouse in its own right, with Stanford affiliates having captured 296 Olympic medals (150 gold, 79 silver, 67 bronze) from 177 medallists including Paris-bound Katie Ledecky, who has 10 career medals to her name currently.
Stanford claimed 26 medals to lead all institutions at the 2020 Tokyo Games. The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games resulted in a school-record 27 medals.
