With a month to go until the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the British Olympic Association (BOA) has today announced Team GB’s Performance Services team that will provide the day-to-day support for the athletes in Paris this summer.
Led by the BOA’s Head of Performance Services, Greg Retter, and in addition to the sport’s own performance staff, the 43-person team, which has staff from all four Home Country Sports Institutes, will form an integral part of the Team GB Headquarters (HQ) workforce. The team will be spread across the Olympic Village, as well as Team GB’s own performance venues: Preparation Camps and The Performance Lodge.
In addition to the Paris roles, there will be six Team GB HQ Performance Analysts who will be based at the Sport Wales Institute in Cardiff, supporting the on-ground operation during the Games.
Charlotte Cowie and Nicola (Nicki) Combarro have been appointed as Team GB’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Chief Physiotherapist respectively. As Head of Medicine at the Football Association, Cowie is a consultant in sport and exercise medicine with 30 years’ experience working in elite sport and has worked at three Olympic Games. Combarro, resumes the role of Chief Physiotherapist having done so at Tokyo 2020 and more recently with England at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She has previously worked with Team GB at four Olympic Games.
Niall Elliot, the BOA’s CMO, will head up the medical team for Team GB across their Preparation Camps in Saint Germain-en-Laye and Reims.
Greg Retter said: “This multi-disciplinary team brings together 43 highly experienced practitioners from across the UK high performance sport network and includes doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists, performance scientists, performance analysts, nutritionists and (performance) chefs.
“Alongside the sports own performance staff, the HQ performance services team form an integral part of the support that the athletes receive from Team GB, and following a rigorous selection process I’m confident we have a highly skilled team of performance staff supporting our athletes and sports to deliver success at the Paris Games.”
