Olympic24: Murray keen to retain Olympic title in Rio

Defending his Olympic crown high on list of priorities for Andy Murray in 2016, while British cyclist Victoria Williamson set for further surgery after crash. Here’s our review of the last 24 hours.

It promises to be a busy year for Andy Murray with defending his Olympic singles crown in Rio high on the agenda.

Ranked two in the world, Murray is currently gearing up for the forthcoming Australian Open where he has finished as runner-up on four occasions.

This included last year where he lost the final to world number one Novak Djokovic.

And while hoping the Serb does not bring his A game to Melbourne again later this month and he is finally able to triumph at the Australian Open, Murray admits it’s not his sole focus his year.

"I've been close many times and that's my number one goal," he said.

"I won the gold in London four years ago so to try to defend that is another big goal for me. They would be the two main ones for me."

Heather Watson got the defence of her Hobart International off to a strong start as she defeated Brazilian Teliana Pereira to move into the second round.

World number 53 Watson needed an hour and 13 minutes to get past her opponent as she recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

She will next face Romanian fourth seed Monica Niculescu in round two.

There was no such luck for British number one Konta however who failed to convert five first-set points to lost 7-6, 7-5 against Slovakia’s third seed Dominika Cibulkova.

Britain’s Victoria Williamson is set for further surgery following a serious crash at the Zesdaagse event in Rotterdam.

Williamson had already had surgery on Sunday after colliding with Elis Ligtlee during an omnium race.

And her father revealed on social media that the 22-year-ol, who team sprint bronze with Becky James at the 2013 World Championships, would have surgery on her hip joint and lower spine.

"Plan to operate tomorrow on hip joint and lower spine. If successful fly home Friday. More lucid but still hurts a lot," he tweeted yesterday.
