'New' Emma Finucane going for gold at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

A new and improved Emma Finucane is set to step out at Glasgow 2026 with gold on her mind.

She may look the same and she may still be quick on two wheels but the 23-year-old will head to her second Commonwealth Games with a newfound wealth of experience of which most could only dream.

In the four years since she won team sprint and individual sprint bronze at Birmingham 2022, Finucane has become a three-time Olympic medallist, three-time world champion and a world record holder.

It means that when she steps out into the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, the Welsh athlete will be one of the hot favourites for gold.

So goodbye shy and young teenage Fincuane and hello to the fun and golden one.

"I was quite new to track cycling last time out and for me it was the biggest stage I competed on for my nation," she said.

"This time round I feel like I'm more of an established sprinter.

"I've grown a lot in the last four years, so much has happened on the bike and off the bike and I think I'm a different person now I'm going to this Games.

"I want to bring out a different version of Emma to Glasgow and I think that's really exciting to be a bit more confident when I'm riding and confident when I'm doing things around the track and I really want to use that and expose this fun side of myself.

"I'm really excited to perform at the highest level on one of the nicest tracks that I've ridden."

Glasgow holds some special memories for the sprinter, having claimed her maiden world title there in 2023, winning sprint gold against Germany's Lea Friedrich.

But while God Save the King was blasting through the velodrome last time Finucane stood on top of the podium in Scotland, the prospect of belting out her own rendition of 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' ("Land of My Fathers") is a tantalising thought.

"It's like a full circle moment for me," she said.

"I didn't really know what was going on then and it led to the Olympics and then world records and more world titles.

"I think for me Glasgow just adds to the dream.

"I've always dreamed of standing on the top step at the Commonwealth Games. I've never done that so I want to sing the anthem.

"It's something I'm really excited to try and achieve."

One half of a track cycling power couple, Finucane will don the Welsh dragon as her boyfriend Matt Richardson suits up for his first Commonwealth Games with Team England this summer, having competed for Australia four years ago.

The fellow British sprinter is the heavy favourite for the men's keirin but with the opportunity the finally represent the country of his birth, Finucane admitted her own pride in seeing him achieve his own Commonwealth dreams alongside targeting her own.

"I think in his lifetime he'd never thought he'd be competing for England ever again so, for this opportunity to come around, he's taken it with two hands," she said.

"And I know deep down when I'm watching him how proud he's going to feel and how special it's going to be. It's nice for us to both have that understanding of the event .

"Sometimes I forget that people are still living for the first time and experiencing things for the first time so I will definitely be proud watching him do that just like I am for myself competing for Wales."
