Musgrave back on World Cup podium after five years

Andrew Musgrave claimed a first World Cup podium in five years as he continued his impressive start to the cross-country skiing season.

The 32-year-old has represented Team GB at each of the last four Olympic Winter Games, recording Britain’s greatest-ever finish in cross-country skiing with a seventh place in PyeongChang in 2018.

That came after Musgrave earned the first two podiums of his career at the end of 2017, but he has not been back among the top three in the five years since.

He changed all that in Beitostolen in Norway, however, as he managed a third-place finish in the 10km classic behind home duo Paal Golberg, the overall World Cup leader, and Didrik Toenseth.

This result has been coming for Musgrave, who finished fifth in Ruka on the opening weekend and then followed that up with a fourth place in Lillehammer.

And this time around, he judged his race to perfection. Sitting in fourth at the halfway stage, he moved into the top three after 8.2km and did not look back as he eventually came home 10.3 seconds behind Golberg.

That made Musgrave the only non-Norwegian in the top five, and the performance also pushes him up to sixth in the overall World Cup standings.

Musgrave was not the only Brit in action, with Andrew Young coming home in 23rd position and Joe Davies finishing 63rd.
