Muirhead and Lammie cap dream season with World Championship gold

Eve Muirhead and Bobby Lammie roared to the mixed doubles world title, crowning an incredible season for Britain’s brilliant curlers.

The Olympic medallists beat hosts Switzerland 9-7 in the final to complete a 11-match winning streak and retain the title for Scotland.

Team-mates Bruce Mouat and Jennifer Dodds won gold at the event when it was staged in Aberdeen a year ago.

This was Muirhead’s first world title since 2013 and saw her complete the set of major medals, adding to Olympic and European gold.

“For myself it’s really special to have competed the full set,” she said.

“It’s been a phenomenal year for myself and my girls at home as well so to round it off playing here with Bobby was really special.

“It was the first time at this event for both of us and we produced a lot of good curling.

“We didn’t drop a game all week and that just shows how consistent we were as players and how we’ve been all season.

“I’m absolutely delighted to get another gold medal and I’m sure we’ll enjoy the celebrations tonight.”

In the final, Lammie laid the foundations for a perfect first end that saw Muirhead make a hit and roll shot with the hammer to score four.

They stole another shot at the next end to go 5-0 in front and they retained that advantage to break at 7-2.

Muirhead, 31, missed a double takeout on the Swiss powerplay and the hosts reduced the deficit with a score of two.

Alina Paetz and Sven Michel kept swinging and they stole two - incredibly the first earned against the Scots all week - that forced the pair to take their powerplay.

They capitalised with two in the seventh end, leaving the Swiss needing three in the last that proved beyond them.

Lammie, who Muirhead described as ‘the best sweeper in the world’ earlier this week, has also enjoyed an incredible international campaign.

He won a second European title as part of Team Mouat before going on to reach an Olympic final with them and continuing an unprecedented run in Canada’s Grand Slam of Curling events – the most lucrative on the circuit – by reaching a fifth successive final at The Players Championship earlier this month, winning four of them.

“This caps off the week we’ve had here, going unbeaten and being in control of what we’re doing, so we’re just delighted to get the win today,” said the 25-year-old.

“It’s been a whirlwind of a season, a pretty memorable one for Scottish and British curling.

“I’m delighted to get my first World Championship win since 2016 in the juniors. It’s been a wee bit of a wait, but getting over that line, hopefully we can just kick on from here and maybe pick up a few more.”
