Lewis Richardson takes 71kg bronze in semi-final bout

Lewis Richardson earned Team GB's first and only boxing medal of Paris 2024 with bronze in the men's 71kg category.

The light-middleweight boxer fell to Mexico's Marco Verde Alvarez in a 3-2 split decision semi-final to take home bronze on his Olympic debut.

The provisional lead changed hands in each of the rounds with Alvarez edging the first before Richardson took a narrow advantage into the final round.

However a decisive third round for the Mexican saw him take the third round unanimously to advance to the gold-medal match.

Victory would have ensured the opportunity to fight for gold but Richardson instead settled for joint-third in what had been a brilliant run to the semi-finals.

"“It was a close bout," he said. "It’s hard to say if I’m happy or disappointed with my performance but what I can say is that I’m proud of how I’ve conducted myself throughout this tournament.

"I’m the only British boxer to medal at these Games. I hope I’ve made the country proud."

The Colchester boxer entered the competition in the round of 16, beating sixth seed Vakhid Abbasov of Serbia to progress into the final four.

And with a 3:2 victory over Jordan's Zeyad Eashash, Richardson sealed himself a medal by reaching the semi-finals, with no bronze medal bout meaning that both semi-final losers clinch Olympic silverware.

And with his competition now over, Richardson revealled that he's most looking forward to indulging in one of the Olympic Village's most viral sweet treats.

“I’m looking forward to eating some cake," he added. "There’s been some chocolate muffins in the Village that have gone viral so I really want to tuck into one of those. Maybe not tonight, but maybe tomorrow.”
