Jones and Sinden strike gold in Sarajevo

Jade Jones and Bradly Sinden have each struck gold for the British taekwondo team at the European Championships for Olympic Weight Categories in Sarajevo.

Double Olympic champion Jones came out on top in the women's -57kg category on Friday, following on from Sinden's success in the men's -68kg discipline the previous day.

There were also bronze medals for Jordyn Smith, Maddison Moore and Rebecca McGowan in an excellent competition for the British contingent.

Jones set the tone for a triumphant day by cruising through her opening round 29-0 against Jana Ruljic.

The 27-year-old, also the reigning world champion, then overcame Patryc Adamkiewicz 34-15 in the semi-final, setting up a contest with Turkey's Hatice Ilgun to decide the overall winner.

Jones was dominant from the outset, ultimately coming out on top 35-11 to add another gold medal to her ever-expanding collection.

Like Jones, Smith was untroubled in her first-round clash as she beat Chloe Cazalin 20-0 in the -49kg category.

The Scot then triumphed 25-4 against Lena Stojkovic to qualify for the semi-finals, where she was beaten 25-5 by Spain's Adriana Cerezo.

Also coming home with a bronze medal in the same weight division is Moore after a rollercoaster day which saw two of her bouts decided by a golden point round.

A comfortable 22-4 win over Sara Cortegoso got the 25-year-old up and running before a quarter-final against Iryna Romoldanova which went to the wire.

Moore held her nerve to come out on top 32-30 on golden point but suffered a reversal of fortunes in the semi-final, as she lost out to Israel's Avishag Semberg on superiority during the golden point round.

McGowan completed Britain's bronze-winning trio, beating Randi Dyngeland 25-4 to get her competition off to a strong start in the +67kg category before losing out against Turkey's Nafia Kus in the semi-finals.

Lauren Williams just missed out on a medal, bowing out against Ikra Kayir at the quarter-final stage in the -67kg discipline having beaten Kla Tvaronaviciute 17-3 in the first round.

The success of Britain's women came hot off the heels of a triumphant day for Sinden, who continued his fine form with victory in the men's -68kg on Thursday.

The 22-year-old, who is the reigning world champion following his memorable triumph in Manchester last year, added victory here to the Open European Club Championships he won in November on his return to competitive action after 11 months.

Sinden went into the event as the top seed and eased past Otto Jorgensen (23-3) and home favourite Nedzad Husic (28-19) in his opening two bouts to set up a semi-final against France's Dylan Chellamootoo.

A 17-5 success ensured Sinden would leave with at least a silver, with Israel's Nimrod Krivishkiy standing between the British ace and the top of the podium.

Krivishkiy gave Sinden his toughest test of the competition but the Yorkshireman dug in to win the bout 32-25 and earn gold.
