Hodgkinson storms to Diamond League victory

Keely Hodgkinson capped a “crazy” year with a stunning Diamond League victory in the women’s 800m to back up her Olympic silver medal.

The 19-year-old kicked hard down the main straight to see off her rivals and cross the line in 1:57.98 at the final event of the Diamond League season, while teammate Jemma Reekie was fourth.

Hodgkinson started the year focussing on the European Junior Championships but she’s become a household name after winning Olympic silver in Tokyo and now the Diamond League in Zurich.

The win ensures she’ll be at next year’s World Championships in Eugene and she says she can't wait for a break.

"It's been a crazy year, I don't think I have had a chance to reflect on it yet," said Hodgkinson.

"There is a lot to sink in but I have enjoyed every aspect of it.

"I am going home then straight on a plane to Greece, and I am not going home for ten days. I don't want to see a track for those ten days, and I am leaving my running shoes at home."

Dina Asher-Smith also completed a strong end to the season by finishing second in the women’s 100m.

Asher-Smith crossed the line in 10.87s – just four hundredths off her personal best – to finish behind Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, while Daryll Neita set a new PB in fourth.

Asher-Smith returned an hour later for the women’s 200m, where she finished third.

Tokyo bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw finished fourth in the women’s pole vault, with 4.67m her highest clearance of the night, while Cindy Sember finished fifth in the women’s 100m hurdles.
