GB men taste winning feeling at Champions Trophy

Great Britain’s men got back to winning ways with a comprehensive 4-1 win over South Korea at the Hockey Champions Trophy in London.

After a goalless draw with world champions Australia and a 2-1 loss to India, Bobby Crutchley’s men were back in goalscoring form as David Condon bagged a brace, with Alistair Brogdon and Ashley Jackson each netting once.

Jackson scored from the penalty spot after 11 minutes before Condon extended the lead early in the second quarter.

You Seungju pulled one back for the South Koreans four minutes later, finishing off a well-worked penalty corner move, but Brogdon restored the two-goal advantage three minutes into the third quarter.

Condon completed the scoring with 14 minutes to play leaving Crutchley was pleased with what he saw.

“We played a bit more like ourselves today and that was pleasing,” said the head coach.

“It was a lot more of our flowing, passing game, we created some great chances and putting them away helps.

“We defended well for long periods, we had to defend penalty corners but the key thing for us was our passing as the game went on.

“We broke the lines, and then when the big space opened up and we ran into it, we saw some of the nice skills the players have.”

Crutchley’s side are next in action against Germany on Tuesday night.

With the top-two sides in the six-nation tournament progressing straight through to Friday’s final, the coach wants his side to keep improving as the tournament goes on, and was thankful to boost their goal difference.

“It’s such a tight tournament, another win and everything changes,” he added.

“Two games left and we will compete well on those, hopefully improve again and get better and better.

“Goal difference could quite possibly be important, there are lots of tight games, different teams taking points off one another, but you just want to play well through it and hopefully qualification will take care of itself.”
