Frustration for Gerken Schofield after moguls qualification

Makayla Gerken Schofield was left frustrated after narrowly missing out on progressing to the women's moguls final at Milano Cortina 2026.

The 26-year-old was just 2.6 points off a spot in the final showdown and finished the competition in 22nd place overall.

Gerken Schofield recorded Britain's best ever finish in the women's moguls at her first Games four years ago with eighth place, but was unable to replicate the performance in Italy.

"I'm a bit frustrated and quite emotional," she said. "I'm pretty happy with my run but there were a few mistakes with the bumps.

"My skis crossed in the middle section and I thought I was going to fall but I caught it so I can be proud of that."

Returning to the moguls park for her second bout of qualification, Gerken Schofield sat in eighth place after the previous day's antics.

It meant that she had to either hope that her competitors' scores did not change, or lay down a stronger score to cement her spot in the top 10 and progress to the afternoon's finals.

Posting 66.38 yesterday, Gerken Schofield laid everything out on the course but was unable to better her first attempt, clocking 66.17 and missing out on progressing to the final by less than three points.

Despite the disappointment, Gerken Schofield admitted that she now will lean on her family and friends to cushion the blow, with her parents, sister Leonie and partner all having made the trip out to support her.

"It means the world (to have friends and family)," she said.

"When I'm feeling the way I am right now, I can go to them for a hug and talk through it with them and feel like home again.

"I was really enjoying myself today and felt pretty relaxed. I just wanted to get down and ski, so that is pretty positive.

Gerken Schofield does not have long to wait until she's back in action once more.

The dual moguls are set to debut at the Olympic Games for the first time in Italy, a fast-faced and dramatic version of the sport which sees athletes go head-to-head on the moguls course.

The highest score of the two advances to the next round and continues down the bracket until the overall winner is decided.

And with another opportunity to shine on snow, Gerken Schofield is ready to showcase the event to the world.

She added: "I keep on forgetting we have dual moguls because it's the first time that it is in the Olympics so I'm pretty excited about that, it's quite an exciting event to watch."
