Fitzpatrick and Fleetwood selected to represent Team GB

Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood have been selected to represent Team GB at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Major winner Fitzpatrick will make his Olympic debut at Le Golf National, while Fleetwood is set to represent Team GB for the second time after teeing up in Tokyo, as he returns to a course where he has enjoyed both individual and team success.

The English duo will be aiming to emulate countryman Justin Rose, who took gold in the men’s event on golf’s return to the Olympic Games at Rio 2016 after a 112-year absence.

Fleetwood first tasted success at Le Golf National with victory at the Open de France in 2017, the year in which he went on to be named European Number One, finishing ahead of reigning Olympic Champion Rose. The seven-time DP World Tour winner then went on to make a memorable 2018 Ryder Cup debut at the Paris venue, winning four points out of five to help Europe defeat the United States.

The World Number 13 has made two further Ryder Cup appearances, in Wisconsin in 2021 and in Rome last year as Europe won back the trophy. He has been in fine form in 2024, starting the season with victory in Dubai and with further results including tied third at the Masters in April - his best finish at Augusta National.

Fitzpatrick claimed his maiden Major title at the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club, Brookline, completing a historic double as he became only the second golfer after the legendary Jack Nicklaus to win both the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur Championship on the same golf course.

The World Number 18 won his second PGA TOUR title in April 2023 and his ninth on the DP World Tour that October, either side of his third Ryder Cup appearance in Rome, as he joined Fleetwood in the victorious 12-player European team.

Team GB Paris 2024 Chef de Mission, Mark England said: “We are thrilled to have two golfers with such tremendous pedigree representing Team GB this summer. It is great to welcome Matt into the fold for what will be his first Olympic Games, and to have Tommy back with us after his time competing in Tokyo 2020. Of course, this course holds such special memories for Tommy, so we are certain he and Matt will both look forward to playing in Paris once again.

Team GB Golf Team Leader, Nigel Edwards, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Matt and Tommy as our male golf athletes travelling to Paris. Having worked with Tommy in Tokyo, I know how much he enjoyed representing Team GB, and he will be looking forward to returning to a course that he knows very well. Matt is a fantastic addition to Team GB’s growing list of golf Olympians, and I have no doubt that he will embrace his debut experience.”

The Olympic golf competition consists of 72-hole individual stroke play for both men and women. Fitzpatrick and Fleetwood will compete in the men’s event from August 1 – August 4.

The women’s golf qualification period ends on Monday June 24, with athlete selection to be confirmed shortly afterwards.
