Emily Muskett joins the British Olympic Association’s Athletes’ Commission

Weightlifter Emily Muskett has been appointed as the newest member of the British Olympic Association’s (BOA) Athletes’ Commission.

The Athletes’ Commission was formed in 2010 to help ensure that athletes are at the heart of everything the BOA does, with their perspective and expertise informing decision making across the organisation. Made up of current and former athletes from a range of summer and winter Olympic sports, the group ensures the athlete voice is fully represented, with the Chair responsible for feeding the views of the Commission back to the BOA Board.

Emily was selected to join the Commission by the current members as part of a drive to broaden the range of sports they represent. Her appointment follows the recent election of Non Stanford (Triathlon), Abigail Irozuru (Athletics), Alex Danson-Bennett (Hockey) and Lloyd Wallace (Freestyle Skiing), who all joined the Commission for the first time in 2023.

Emily said: "I am so excited to be a part of the BOA Athletes' Commission, particularly as the first ever weightlifting athlete member. I hope to represent the smaller progression sports as we head towards Paris 2024, and will help ensure the athletes are at the centre of all that we do. I hope to play my part in ensuring every athlete has the best support and experience both in preparation for and during the Olympic Games."

The Commission also recently held elections for the Vice Chair position which saw gymnast Kristian Thomas re-elected for his second term.

Kristian said: “I am delighted and privileged to be re-elected as Vice Chair. The current sporting landscape is ever changing and it is now more important than ever that the Athletes' Commission and Team GB work closely together; continuing the important role of keeping athletes at the heart of BOA. I look forward to continuing to work closely with Lizzie and Team GB on what is a very exciting time with Paris 2024 fast approaching, and Milan-Cortina 2026 shortly after.”

Lizzie Simmonds, Chair of the Athletes’ Commission, said: “Team GB represents an incredibly broad range of sports, and ensuring we accurately reflect this diversity within our Athletes' Commission is very important. As a group, we are delighted to have Emily on board and believe her experience and perspective will add huge value as we build towards Paris 2024.

“I’d also like to congratulate Kristian on the results of our recent Vice Chair election. Being chosen for a second term is a great testament to the support and guidance he offers the Commission, and I look forward to continuing our leadership over the next two years.”
