Ellie Aldridge takes inaugural women's kite Olympic title

Ellie Aldridge became the inaugural female Formula Kite Olympic champion with glittering gold in Marseille.

The 27-year-old produced two dominating performances on French waters to spoil the party and snatch the gold from underneath home favourite Lauriane Nolot.

Nolot finished with silver with the Netherland's Annelous Lammerts in bronze.

Aldridge was in silver medal position going into the final day of racing, with Nolot narrowly ahead and it all came down to the final few races.

The French woman needed to win just one race to take the title whilst Aldridge needed two and the Brit decided to do it the easy way, storming to victory in the first two races to deny Nolot and make history as the first ever Olympic champion in the class.

"I still can't believe it," she said. "Today was all about winning races, if you don't win the races then you're not going to win so that's how I approached the day.

"The first race was really close but I just about managed to get in front and stay in front and it was the same again for the second race.

"It's been incredible, we haven't had the easiest conditions and it's been tricky but it's been really cool and I hope everyone watching on TV thinks the same thing.”

Aldridge originally started out as a dingy sailor but switched to kiteboarding in 2018.

She has become a regular contender at major events in recent times, winning silver at the Olympic test event in July 2023 and in August's World Championships. She rounded off a stellar year with victory at the 2023 Formula Kite European Championships in Portsmouth.

At her maiden Olympics, Aldridge started off strong, constantly chasing Nolot at the top of the field and qualifying straight into the final.

With a lower number of total points, Nolot had a slight advantage heading into the final and was tipped for gold.

But Aldridge proved her strength with two incredible races, taking the win in both to propel her onto the top of the podium and clinch Team GB's 13th gold medal and 50th overall medal of Paris 2024.
