Dujardin leads GB to European dressage silver

Charlotte Dujardin won a 19th major championship medal after anchoring Great Britain’s dressage team to a European silver in Hagen.

In their first outing since claiming double Olympic bronze, Dujardin and horse Gio, the last of the British quartet to compete, scored a superb 79.829 per cent for their routine.

That gave GB a combined score of 232.245, while Germany backed up their Olympic gold with a sensational team performance to score 238.944. Denmark (231.165) completed the podium in third.

It was a strong comeback from Germany, who trailed overnight leaders GB after Charlotte Fry (77.671 per cent) and Gareth Hughes (74.394 per cent) produced strong routines on day one.

Carl Hester, who was also part of the Team GB team that won bronze in Tokyo alongside Dujardin and Fry, scored 74.845 for his 13th major medal.

This is Dujardin’s first European Championship medal in six years and her first on Gio, who was a late replacement for Mount St. John prior to the Olympics.

The 36-year-old now has six Olympic, five World Championship and eight European Championship medals.
