Curlers inspired to victory by Weston gold

Bobby Lammie says Matt Weston’s skeleton gold medal has inspired the rest of Team GB ahead of the second half of the Olympic Winter Games.

Weston’s sensational gold on Friday night was the first Team GB medal at Milano Cortina and the first by a solo man since Robin Cousins in 1980.

Lammie is competing just a couple of hundred years away at the Cortina Curling Centre, and played a key part as Bruce Mouat’s rink won 7-4 against Czechia.

They are now 3-1 in the round-robin phase and second in the table, behind only the unbeaten Switzerland.

Team GB made a fine start by beating China and Sweden before one unfortunate stone in the first end cost them defeat to Italy.

But they were in control here and Lammie says there is a feelgood factor in the camp.

“It was pretty cool to watch that and it kind of gives you momentum I guess and makes you want to do that yourself so yeah, try to replicate that anywhere we can,” he said.

“It definitely motivates you and I think getting that first medal for Team GB and it being a gold as well kind of, as I say, gives the rest of the group confidence.”

Seven wins from nine games will be enough to guarantee Team GB a semi-final place, while six and potentially five wins could be enough depending on how the competition shakes out.

They were in excellent form here, scoring two points in both the first and third ends to grab the early initiative.

They only scored three points thereafter, preferring to rein in their aggression after doing the hard work early.

Czechia huffed and puffed but Team GB were in fine touch and comfortably saw out the win.

“I think the loss yesterday hurt and we had a good 24 hours to think about it which isn't ideal,” added Grant Hardie.

“But we came out this morning really sharp out the box and got a nice healthy lead and just being patient and waiting for the finish line.

“I'd obviously like to be 4-0 but you know that's not possible now so yeah, 3-1 with some very difficult games to come.”
