Campbell & Muskett make weightlifting history at European Championships

Emily Campbell capped a dream week for Britain's weightlifters as she smashed two national records to win gold at +87kg.

Coming into the week's competition in Moscow, the last British lifter to win continental gold was Myrtle Augee in 1995.

Campbell joined team-mate Emily Godley in winning gold, and Sarah Davies' silver, to produce the nation's best performance at the event since 1948.

Nailing all six lifts, Campbell snatched a British record 122kg to secure gold in that discipline and then heaved 154kg in clean & jerk, a total of 276kg earning overall top step.

The 26-year-old also broke a Commonwealth record with the weight she lifted in clean & jerk and overall.

Campbell, from Nottingham, is now firmly in the hunt for Europe's Tokyo 2020 continental quota place having scored plenty of points in Russia and the IWF poised to adjust criteria to account for COVID-19.

Previously in the qualification period, she won Commonwealth bronze in 2018, bronze at the 2019 European Championships and finished ninth at the 2019 World Championships

Earlier in the week, Godley got the ball rolling with a historic gold in the 71kg class.

She won silver in the snatch, lifting 98kg, and then produced 129kg in the clean & jerk to leap into the overall gold medal position.

The 2018 Commonwealth champion is also in contention for a quota place at the Games.

Sarah Davies also got in on the medal act at 64kg, breaking the British record with 129kg in the clean & jerk to surge to overall silver.

The haul of three medals was Britain's second-best return since 1948, when two golds and two silvers were won.
