Bryony Page crowned world trampolining champion

Bryony Page twisted and turned her way to gold at the Trampolining World Championships in Baku.

Page has two Olympic medals to her name but none in her first seven attempts at the World Championships.

That was before she pulled out the routine of a lifetime to score 56.235 and take gold in Azerbaijan.

“I’m overwhelmed. It hasn’t really sunk in," said Page. "I’m just happy to have got out there, completed a routine and added in my new skill to the end. That felt really nice."

It is the latest chapter in an amazing career - Page won silver at Rio 2016, Team GB's first trampolining medal, and bronze at Tokyo 2020.

The 30-year-old's time in the sport has been touched by adversity, in the shape of injury and 'lost move syndrome' earlier in her career.

“I improved my scores from the other day and competed a routine close to what I think my potential is, so I’m really happy with that," she said.

“I wasn’t sure if it was going to be good enough for a medal, let alone the top place on the podium, so it’s really special. Standing on top of the podium with the national anthem playing was such a special moment.”

Having qualified in third place, Page aborted her first attempt at the routine, marked with a 15.200 degree of difficulty, the highest tariff in the field.

When she took off, in her own time, it was worth the wait and the routine of a lifetime, featuring two triple saltos and a perfect dismount. Throughout the routine she stayed central to the bed with minimal travel.

The 15 seconds she spent airborne were worth 56.235 points, some distance clear of China's Cao Yunzhu who scored 55.815 in silver medal position.

Page was then Britain's representative in the women's trampoline element of the all-around team final, scoring 52.360.

She then performed alongside Louise Brownsey in the synchro element, the pair recording 47.230 to help secure overall bronze and cap a dream day for Page.
