Bianca Walkden is already planning for her next shot at Olympic gold after a sensational return to the taekwondo mat at the French Open.
The 30-year-old was competing for the first time since the Tokyo Games, where she won her second Olympic bronze medal, and was the class of the +73kg field.
Walkden beat home favourite Solene Avoulette 15-4 in a convincing final to capture her first French Open gold in eight years.
She is now eyeing up April’s World Championships but is aware of the next Olympics in Paris creeping onto the horizon.
“It was good to be back,” said the three-time world champion. “I felt nervous because I wasn’t sure what would happen.
“So, it’s nice to come back with gold. I didn’t have too many fights, but I fought who was in front of me and did the job.
“It’s nice to have a winning feeling again. And it’s nice to know what I need to do to prep myself for the World Championships next April.
“All this fighting is for the Worlds. I feel I need more fights in the bag because I have missed out on ring time.
“But Paris (Olympics) is also only two years away, so all the points matter to get me in that top position as world number one.”
Walkden wasn’t the only Tokyo athlete to leave Paris with more medals, as Lauren Williams took silver in the -67kg event after losing 13-12 in the final to Brazil’s Milena Titoneli.
GB taekwondo left with four medals in total, with Maddison Moore taking silver in the -49kg division and future prospect Mo Nour a bronze in the men's -58kg.
