Bankes and Weston to carry flag at Closing Ceremony

Matt Weston and Charlotte Bankes capped a fortnight to remember after being selected to carry the British flag in the Winter Olympic closing ceremony.

Weston became the first British athlete to win two golds at the same winter Games with his double skeleton success in Cortina.

And he'll join forces with Charlotte Bankes, who won Britain's first ever gold on snow, at the ceremony in Verona's iconic Roman amphitheatre.

“To be selected as flagbearer is a massive, massive honour and I’m so proud to be able to represent the country at the closing ceremony," said Weston.

"The fact that it’s taking place at such an iconic venue makes it even more exciting. I think it will be a unique and very Italian experience, and a great way to end the Games.

“The team have done everyone at home proud. We’ve got some amazing athletes here and they’ve shown the world what we’re made of.

"We’ve won medals and come close to winning medals in other events - there’s been so many incredible performances from so many different athletes. I’m very proud to be part of such a talented team - one that I hope has inspired lots of people back home.”

Bankes claimed gold in memorable fashion after missing out four years ago in Beijing in heart-breaking fashion.

Coming in as the reigning world champion, she crashed in the quarter-finals of the women's snowboard cross.

But this time around, despite an injury-disrupted build-up, she and Huw Nightingale combined to make history with their mixed team gold.

She said: "To be asked to carry the flag is a dream come true and feels like a moment for our entire snowboard cross team. We have made history for our sport, and I will be walking out there carrying it for everyone who has been part of that journey.

"Leading Team GB out at my first Closing Ceremony will be very special. It is a chance to reflect on everything we have put into these Games and to celebrate the medals we have won, and those we have come so close to

"I am so proud to be part of Team GB and I hope the past few weeks encourage the British public and the next generation to see a glimpse of what is possible in winter sport.”

The pair's historic contribution to the team was praised by Team GB's chef de mission Eve Muirhead, an Olympic champion four years ago in curling.

She said: “Matt and Charlotte are incredible ambassadors for Team GB and as they lead the team in Verona at the Closing Ceremony, I hope that they can take a moment to reflect on all they have achieved, and soak in what I know will be unforgettable experience.”
