Asher-Smith flexes 200m muscles in Florence

Dina Asher-Smith cruised to victory in her first major 200m run since being crowned world champion in the event.

The 25-year-old led from the gun in Florence to clock 22.06, the second-fastest time in the world this year behind 400m Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo.

Asher-Smith came home more than 0.5s ahead of a field featuring 2017 world champion Dafne Schippers to take the Diamond League win.

“It was really important to do a good race here today,” she said.

“Obviously, it's been really hard over the past year and a bit because of the pandemic - so I'm really proud to be able to put that kind of time, and I definitely have more in me."

A clocking of 22.06 was Asher-Smith’s fastest 200m time outside of her two most recent gold-medal performances at major Championships, the 2019 Worlds and 2018 Europeans.

The 21.88 star’s record stands at three wins from three top-level races this year, with triumphs in Gateshead and Hengelo coming over 100m in similar style.

Across distances and including minor heats and finals since 2019, Asher-Smith has finished inside the first three in 32 successive races.

Meanwhile, Laura Muir ran her second-fastest ever 1500m to claim third place in an incredible preview of the Tokyo Olympic final.

The Scot was alongside world champion Sifan Hassan, fresh from setting a 10,000m world record on Sunday, and Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon at the bell.

She lost contact with the pair on the back straight but maintained her form to clock 3:55.59, a season’s best and close to her own British record of 3:55.22.

“To be able to run this fast in the time leading up to the Olympics, it feels really great,” said the 28-year-old.

Italy-based Andrew Pozzi managed a season’s best and second behind a world-leading time in the 110m hurdles.

The Rio Olympian is still in the early stages of his outdoor season and 13.25, with a couple of mistakes, represented a positive maiden major race of 2021.

“Overall the race was fine, although the time was good, and it was great to come second in such a strong field,” he said.
