Around the Games: Day 12 of Paris 2024

The women's golf teed off for the first round of Paris 2024 on day 12, with Georgia Hall and Charley Hull in competition for Team GB.

Hall led the way for the Brits on a challenging day, shooting two over par with Hull on nine over par.

But Hull, who has been quick to note how recent injury has set her back, was still thrilled to get on the course and become a two-time Olympian.

“I don’t think a lot of people realise that I took 10 days off golf and had an MRI and everything," she said.

“That is 100 per cent why I played the way I did.

“This is my first week back after injury, and it’s just about getting that first round out of the way.

“Hopefully I’ve got the rust out of me and I’m looking forward to hopefully shooting nine under tomorrow!”

Tommy Fleetwood took silver for Team GB in the men's event earlier at Paris 2024 and Hall is keen to jump on the back of his success as she began her campaign at Le Golf.

She said: “It’s awesome what he did and doesn’t surprise me at all.

“He was so close to getting gold, but to get a medal in these Games is a great achievement in itself.”

Miles away in Marseille, Micky Beckett finished sixth in the men's ILCA 7 (dinghy) after lack of wind once again played havoc on the race schedule.

Beckett was fourth going into the medal race, needing five points to place on the podium.

And with a brilliant navigation around the first mark, Beckett had rocketed up into medal position before the conditions changed and the race was abandoned once more. His second attempt did not prove as fruitful, falling behind with two penalties to take sixth overall.

And in tough conditions, Beckett revealed his mixed emotions after dreams of standing on the podium.

"We did about 90 percent of the race and then the breeze died right at the last bit," he said.

"In that race I was coming second and I’d have got the bronze medal and it was all looking pretty good.

"Then obviously to have that taken away was pretty tough. But this is sport, this is sailing in particular. It does happen.

"The race chewed me up, spat me out and I went from fourth with a really good chance of bronze to sixth, which is just a bit crushing for me.

"In time I'll get over it. Right now I'm just very grateful to have family and friends here and the British Sailing Team."

The mixed multihull medal race, featuring Team GB’s John Gimson and Anna Burnet was postponed until Thursday which will also see the men's and women's kite final series.
