Andrew Musgrave claims fourth consecutive top 10 finish at Milano Cortina

Andrew Musgrave bowed out of his fifth Olympic Games at Milano Cortina 2026 with a fourth consecutive top 10 finish.

The 35-year-old clinched another sixth place in the men's 50km mass start, with debutant Joe Davies closing his Games with 16th place.

Musgrave's best ever Olympic result coming into Milano Cortina was a seventh place finish in the 30km skiathlon back at PyeongChang 2018, but he has thrown that out of the window in Italy, with two sixths, a fifth and a ninth place finish.

But ever the competitor, sixth was still not enough for the cross country skier.

"I've got mixed feelings, the race suited me well today it was high paced the whole way and that's good for me as it's less about fighting for positions and instead finding your spot in the pack," he said.

"I can stay in there and push as hard as you can the whole way.

"Unfortunately today, I pushed as hard as I could but it just wasn't quite at the front.

"The way that athletes are put together, you always think that you're going to do better or everybody thinks that they're going to win.

"We are a little bit naïve, I'm not regularly on the podium but then come here and think that I'm going to win everything so there are mixed feelings.

"Sixth in the world is a good result but it's not the chunk of medal around my neck that I dreamt of.

"The whole British team have done a super good Olympics and so it's great to see that. It shows that we have a promising future."

Davies was pleased with his own 16th place finish after battling through cramp in the latter half of the race.

Just shy of two top 10 finishes on a debut Olympic Games, it added to Musgrave's own sentiment of the future of British cross-country, with plenty of upcoming talent showing their strengths in Italy.

"This Games has showed that we are one of the top contender teams," said Davies.

"Having Muzzy [Musgrave] with another great result today just shows that we're only getting better."

Musgrave had a full team of supporters on his side throughout the course, with his school friends from Scotland making their way over to watch him compete for the very first time.

It was just one of the beauties of having a first Olympics of five in a European time zone, with his friends cheering on with beers in hand in full Scottish dress as Musgrave completed what has easily been his most successful ever Olympic Games.

"My goal now is to go and drink some prosecco," he said.

"My mates have come from Scotland. They are out there in their kilts and have never seen a ski race before, so if I'm not going to go and have a few with them then there's something wrong with me."
