Handball is considered one of the oldest games in the history of sport with references in Homer's Odyssey provide evidence of a similar game.
The sport originally began life in the Olympics as an 11-a-side outdoor game but moved to seven-a-side indoor format for 1972 after the sport’s evolution in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The woman’s event was introduced four years later at Montreal 1976 and both have remained on the programme ever since.
Handball is played in an indoor court between two teams, of seven players each. The players’ objective is, by only using their hands, to throw the ball into the goal of the opposing team. The team with the most goals at the end of the match wins.
