This week in Olympic sport: July 22-28

Last week there was much to celebrate with Chris Froome ensuring the Tour de France yellow jersey remained in British hands – but don’t put the champagne away as this week there’s more to toast: We preview a flavour of Olympic sporting events taking place below.

Saturday marks the one year anniversary of the London 2012 opening ceremony with the Olympic Stadium set to welcome the great and good of the athletics world over the weekend to kick off a two-day party with Paralympic stars taking centre stage on Sunday.

That is of course the Anniversary Games, which also doubles up as the 11th Diamond League meeting of the season, while away from the track and the FINA World Championships really swing into full gear in Barcelona.

Britain’s pool swimmers join the synchronised swimmers, divers and water polo players in getting in on the action as of Sunday while sticking with water and there are two class specific major championships in sailing.

That equates to the Finn European Championships and, new to the Olympic programme, the Nacra 17 World Championships and to continue with the global theme the very best BMX cyclists descend on Auckland in New Zealand.
