Robin Cousins announced as Team GB 2014 Ambassador

The British Olympic Association (BOA) announced today that Lake Placid 1980 Olympic gold medallist Robin Cousins will serve as an official Team GB 2014 Ambassador. Cousins joins Vancouver 2010 Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams who was announced as an Ambassador earlier this year.

Before the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, which saw Williams win Olympic gold, Cousins was Team GB’s last individual Olympic winter gold medallist. Cousins enjoyed a hugely successful sporting career which saw him crowned Olympic and European Champion, three time World Free Skating Champion and World Championship silver medallist.

As a Team GB 2014 Ambassador Cousins is attending the Team GB Sochi 2014 Conference this summer in Bath, where he will be involved in sessions aimed to motivate and inspire athletes and team members looking to be a part of Team GB at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. He will also be delivering a key note session to the delegates of the Conference.

Over 10 months in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games Cousins used his competition and judging experience to work closely with the synchronised swimming team and their coaches with their preparations for the Games attending training sessions and competitions. In the build up to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Cousins will once again be available to share his knowledge with judging-based sports who wish to tap into his support on their journey to Sochi.

Cousins, who has committed his time voluntarily, will also assist the BOA in raising the profile of Team GB through his involvement in media and fundraising events to support Team GB prior to and during the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

Robin Cousins said:

“I am thrilled to join Amy Williams as a Team GB 2014 Ambassador for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. After the success of the London 2012 Ambassador programme and my personal involvement in that, I know we can support the athletes and help them be as prepared as possible to give performances they will be proud of in Sochi.

“We will field one of our strongest teams in the Sochi and the Team GB athletes deserve all the support they can get. There was an overwhelming Olympic Spirit that spurred the athletes into action in London and we'll make sure our Olympic Winter athletes get some of the same in Russia!”

Team GB Chef de Mission Mike Hay said:

“I am delighted that Robin will once again be supporting Team GB as an official Team GB 2014 Ambassador. As a former Olympic and European Champion, Robin will be a huge source of inspiration to our athletes and support staff in Sochi.

“Robin is incredibly passionate about winter sport and the Olympics and he will play an integral role as an Ambassador on the journey in the lead up to, and during, the 2014 Games. He will be hands on and engage with Team GB supporters and athletes as well as their nearest and dearest.”
