Oyepitan achieves Olympic standard

Britain's Abi Oyepitan recorded the 'A' qualifying standard in the 200 metres at the European Championships in Helsinki.

Oyepitan needed to run 23.10 seconds to be eligible for selection for London 2012 and clocked 23.05secs in winning her heat.

"The 'A' standard, that's what I wanted to get, that's what my coach Tony (Lester) told me to do, just get the 'A' standard so it is out of the way," said Oyepitan, who was seventh in the Olympic 200m final back in 2004 in Athens.

Oyepitan became only the second British athlete to record an 'A' standard in Helsinki, although Lawrence Okoye was only 14cm away from doing so in discus qualifying.

In the men's long jump, JJ Jegede kept his Olympic hopes alive with a leap of 8.01m to make Sunday's final, where he needs to jump the 'A' standard of 8.20m.

However, joint British record-holder Chris Tomlinson must rely on a discretionary place after 7.84m was not enough to reach the final, with team-mate Julian Reid (7.73m) also missing out.
