Olympic24: Rio boost for Davis after World Cup silver

James Davis impresses in San Jose as he takes silver at the latest fencing World Cup while Laura Trott and Katie Archibald round off European Track Cycling Championships in style. Here's our review of the last 24 hours.

Fencer James Davis boosted his position in the foil world rankings after taking silver at the World Cup in San Jose.

Initially beginning the weekend ranked 14th in the world, Davis moved into the top ten after a run to the final which saw him beat the reigning world champion and world number two Yuki Ota of Japan in the semi-final.

A match up against Russia’s Timur Safin in the final proved a step too far as he lost out 15-8.

And while qualification for the fencing discipline in Rio is initially based on team rankings, should Great Britain fail to qualify, Davis’ result puts him in a great position to qualify a individual place.

British Fencing’s Performance Director Alex Newton said; “It was a fantastic result for James and a great start to the season, with every ranking point counting as we enter the second half of the Olympic qualification.

“However, there was little time for celebration, as we are fencing in the team event with qualifying a team a top priority for both James and the men’s foil squad.”

The European Track Cycling Championships will always hold a special place in the heart of Laura Trott after the double Olympic champion wrote her name into the history books as the most successful ever rider at the event.

Trott, who had already won team pursuit and scratch gold at the 2015 event in Grenchen, took her tally to ten European titles with victory in the omnium.

It came in a successful final session for Great Britain’s riders with Katie Archibald also finishing with a hat-trick of titles following individual pursuit and elimination race gold on the final day.

"For me that's my tenth European title so I'm super happy with that,” Trott said.

“It's just been great. I absolutely love the Euros. I did it from the very first one in 2010 and I've been a European champion in every one I've competed at, which I guess is quite lucky.” Read more here. Stewart on top on day one of Six Day London

Brit Mark Stewart dedicated the 1878 Cup victory to his mum after he triumphed on the first evening of Six Day London action.

Lee Valley VeloPark – host venue for London 2012 – once again welcomed some of the best riders in the word to the velodrome on Sunday.

And Stewart made sure to give the home fans plenty to cheer with overall victory the five-event 1878 Cup.

“It was my Mum’s birthday yesterday so it’s a birthday present for her,” said Stewart. "I don’t see her that often because we live and train in Manchester away from our families.

“The atmosphere was absolutely breathtaking and the arena is fantastic. It feels like home and the crowd really does get you round when you’re in the red and you’re focused. All the noise you hear really keeps you going.”

Taekwondo fighter Lutalo Muhammad is adamant he will be taking plenty of positives away from the Manchester Grand Prix despite having to settle for silver.

He had already disposed of Iranian world number one Mahdi Khodabakhshi in the -80kg semi-final but was unable to get the better of Tunisia’s Oussama Oueslati, losing out 16-6.

“I’m slightly disappointed to get the silver medal as I really wanted the gold but I can take a lot of lessons from this and improve for next time,” said Muhammad, who nevertheless still boosted his chances of qualifying for Rio 2016 by gaining valuable ranking points.

“Certainly from where I’ve come from, coming from injury, I guess I should be happy that I could make this Grand Prix and be able to compete in front of this home crowd."

Great Britain’s rowers continued to put down the marker for the season ahead after a solid second day of action at the British Championships in Nottingham.

In the men’s quad, Jonny Walton, John Collins, Peter Lambert and Nick Middleton took victory for Leander Club A.

While Leander also dominated in the women’s competition, with Vicky Thornley, Polly Swann, Holly Nixon and Jess Lyden taking the win.

Melanie Wilson stroked an Imperial College women’s eight to victory while the men’s title was won by an Oxford Brookes University A crew including world championship medallists Scott Durant, Matt Tarrant and Joel Cassells.

“We were definitely made to race, they pushed us the whole way,” said Thornley, who partnered Katherine Grainger in the GB women’s double during 2015.

“It’s been a really good day. It’s blown away the cobwebs and got the lungs going again.”
