Andy Murray held his nerve and produced a stellar performance to see off Rafael Nadal and take the Madrid Master crown in straight sets 6-3 6-2.
The Scot broke early and never looked back as he pinned Nadal down and capitalised on every mistake with devastating effect.
And with the French Open on the horizon, Murray was delighted to clinch his second clay title of the season after victory in the Munich Open last week.
“I dealt with all the nervy moments that I had in the match pretty well,” said Murray.
“When I had the break point at beginning of the second set and I hit the drive volley into the tape, I responded well the next few points and managed to get the break there.
“From my side it was a very good performance, I’m sure Rafa feels like he could have played better but I couldn’t have done much more.”
England sevens head coach Simon Amor insists his side are looking forward to next weekend’s Sevens World Series finale with confidence after finishing third in Glasgow on Sunday.
After progressing through the pool stages on Saturday, England opened their day with a 14-7 win quarter-final win over Canada.
However New Zealand brought an end to that as Rieko Ione dived over with two minutes remaining in the semi-final to seal a 5-0 win.
Despite missing out on the final, England responded well with a 24-19 win over the USA to secure the bronze position.
"We created some opportunities in the semi-final against New Zealand but weren’t able to take them in difficult conditions,” said Amor.
“We have been able to rotate the squad, give players valuable game time which has been a real plus from the weekend and we feel good heading into London.”
William Fox-Pitt admitted the wait was worth it after winning his second Badminton Horse Trials, this time on Chilli Morning.
The pair went clear in the final show jumping round to take the win after New Zealand’s Andrew Nicholson – leader after the dressage and cross country stages, picked up four faults to finish sixth.
The result is Fox-Pitt’s second triumph at the four-star event, with the first coming back in 2004 on board Tamarillo.
"It's amazing to win here. It's been a long wait," said Fox-Pitt. “I'm old now and it might never happen again.”
Jo Pavey believes she has the platform to build from after she finished tenth in the Great Manchester Run – her first major road race since 2012.
Victory went to Betsy Saina with Britain’s Gemma Steele six seconds behind in second place while Pavey struggled to keep up with the front runners.
“I’ve got to be realistic, I’d had a bit of disruption with illness over the past few weeks,” Pavey told the BBC. “But not making any excuses, I was just pleased to be out there and racing again.
“Obviously I’m a bit disappointed; I would have liked to have run better than that. I’m just pleased to get started. I think that will do me a lot of good and hopefully I can build on that now.”
Liam Phillips dropped down to fourth in the overall UCI BMX Supercross World Cup standings after exiting in the quarter-finals at round two in Papendal.
Phillips had finished second in Saturday’s time trial and carried that form into the motos, qualifying in second with first, second and fourth-place finishes respectively in the three runs.
But he came unstuck in the quarter-finals, unclipping from his pedal on the S-turn on the course at the Olympic Training Centre before being edged off the track by France’s Damien Godet.
Victory instead went to Dutch rider Niek Kimman while Olympic champion Mariana Pajon triumphed in the women’s event.
Olympic bronze medal winner Lutalo Muhammad wants his teammates to do him proud after he was forced to withdraw from the World Championships in Russia after sustaining a knee injury.
The 23-year-old was set to compete in the -87kg division but damaged a knee cartilage in one of the team’s final training sessions.
"It is disappointing but these things happen in sport," he said. "There are a lot of big events coming up this year, including the World Grand Prix series, so there will be plenty more medal opportunities.
"I would loved to have fought at the World Championships but I am sure my team mates will do me proud."
Great Britain captain Drew Sullivan was unable to help his London Lions side claim the BBL Play-Off title as Newcastle Eagles ran out 96-84 winners.
Charles Smith hit 24 points for Newcastle while Rahmon Fletcher was named the game’s best player.
Victory means the Eagles the season with a clean sweep of all four BBL trophies having also won the BBL Championship, the BBL Cup and the BBL Trophy.
