Nicola Adams fights her way to the medal bouts with quarter-final win

Olympic champion Nicola Adams progressed to the semi-finals of the women's flyweight draw at Rio 2016 with a victory by unanimous decision over Ukraine's Tetyana Kob.

Adams, who had a bye in the previous round, shook off a bit of ring rust to outlast an aggressive and free-flowing opponent over the four rounds.

The London 2012 gold medallist now fights China's Cancan Ren for a place in the gold medal bout and says she's taken inspiration from one of Team GB's other medallists.

“For Mo Farah to fall over and still get up to win [the 10,000m], that just shows true grit and determination, but that’s what it takes to be a true champion. Even when you’re down you’ve got to find a way to get back up to win that medal," she said.

“I was a little bit off with the ring rust, but I’ve got the first fight out of the way and [will be better] when I fight in the semis.

“I’ve been here nearly four weeks and I’ve been quite anxious to get in there and perform. It’s nice to get the first one out of the way."

Kob came out swinging in the first round, but Adams used her speed and agility to avoid the best of the punches, with all three judges scoring it 10-9 in the Brit's favour.

The Ukrainian's intensity continued into the second round but again it was Adams to land the most meaningful punches, biding her time to hit Kob on the counter.

Adams upped her punch-rate in the third, leaving herself open to a few of Kob's blows, but two of the three judges scored the round in the Brit's favour.

The fourth was also a tight affair, with both boxers landing some good blows as the punches flowed but again it was Adams who came out on top.

“We knew [Kob] was going to be aggressive, that’s the style that she has and we were ready for that," she added.

“A medal means everything to me. I came here for a medal, but you know me – I always want the gold so I’ll be aiming for that."
