McCorkell gets Britain up and running at Europeans

Eleven-time British champion Jenna McCorkell got Britain up and running at the European Figure Skating Championships as she progressed to the ladies’ free skate.

McCorkell, who will make her second Olympic Winter Games appearance in Sochi next month, was part of a 37-strong ladies field that brought the curtain up on the Europeans in Budapest.

Given start number 20, McCorkell scored 39.59 for her short program and was forced into an agonising wait to discover if that was enough to advance to the free skate.

It proved to be so with McCorkell the 24th out of 24 to progress to Friday as Russian duo Adelina Sotnikova and Julia Lipnitskaia led the way with 70.73 and 69.97 respectively.

Britain have of all their Olympic skaters in action in Hungary with Carter Marie Jones and Richard Sharpe joining Penny Coomes and Nicholas Buckland in the ice dance.

Matthew Parr is Britain’s sole skater in the men’s event and Amani Fancy and Christopher Boyadji will compete alongside Stacey Kemp and David King in the pairs.
