Marvellous Marchant claims World Cup keirin silver in New Zealand

Katy Marchant produced a superb ride to take silver in the women's keirin on the final day of Track World Cup action in New Zealand.

Marchant, a 2016 individual sprint bronze medallist from Rio 2016, kicked on with trademark speed to force her way onto the podium in a typically frenetic final.

Leeds’ Marchant and fellow sprinter Lauren Bate were the only Brits to compete in Cambridge, the fifth and penultimate round of the 2018-19 Track World Cup series after earlier competitions in France, Canada, Germany and the UK.

The pair were eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the team sprint on the opening day before Marchant was beaten by Ukraine’s Olena Starikova, a double European silver medallist from last year, in the quarter-finals of the individual sprint competition on Saturday.

But Sunday proved to be much more fruitful for the 25-year-old Brit as she fended off stiff competition to seal the runner-up spot.

Hong Kong’s Wai Sze Lee, who claimed keirin bronze at London 2012, pipped Marchant to gold, winning in a time of 11.408, while Ukraine’s Liubov Basova was third.

The sixth and final round of Track World Cup action takes place next week, with action getting under way in Hong Kong on January 25.
