Konta suffers first-round French Open defeat

Jo Konta is still looking for her first French Open match win after losing out to Yulia Putintseva in straight sets at Roland Garros.

The 26-year-old’s 6-4 6-3 loss belied her earlier confidence about playing on a clay surface, as the Kazakhstani resigned Konta to her fourth successive first round exit at the second Grand Slam of the calendar.

Konta's form has picked up over Slams in the past two seasons, reaching the Australian Open semi-finals in 2016 as well as the last-four stage at Wimbledon last time out.

But she wasn't able to match that and the start of 2018 and so far this year has only reached one quarter-final, back in January in Brisbane.

The former world No.4 admits clay is her least favourite surface but was adamant about her capability on it before Sunday’s loss to the world No.93.

But while she had 22 winners in the match, the offensive nature of the game wasn't always matched with the points, conceding 32 unforced errors to lose out in nearly 90 minutes of tennis.

Her departure leaves Britain’s female hopes resting on Heather Watson, who faces France’s Oceane Dodin on Monday.

British number three Cameron Norrie will also be on court, making his debut against Peter Gojowczyk of Germany, while Kyle Edmund is also in action against Australian Alex de Minaur.

Elsewhere, top seed Rafael Nadal faces Simone Bolelli, and Novak Djokovic will play Rogerio Dutra da Silva of Brazil.
