Glasgow 2014 Daily Preview: Wednesday July 30th

Olympic champion Greg Rutherford is looking to make a little family history at Hampden Park on Wednesday night.

His great-grandfather played for England at the fabled football venue and Rutherford, the top qualifier for the long jump final (6.45pm), is looking to experience the Hampden Roar for himself.

Martyn Rooney will be looking to challenge Olympic champion Kirani James in the 400m final (8.30pm) after impressively qualifying and heptathlete Jessica Taylor is well placed for a medal in third after four events.

And it's big night for Scottish steeplechaser Eilish McColgan. It's 28 years since her mother, competing as Liz Lynch, famously won her Commonwealth 10,000 title in Edinburgh. And McColgan's final is scheduled for 7.45pm

Max Whitlock is top seed for the men's all-around gymnastics final (1pm). Whitlock won three medals in Delhi four years ago, a springboard to his double bronze at London 2012.

He already has a gold in the team event and will be favourite to improve on his fourth place in 2010 in the all-around. Hannah Whelan is the leading home hope in the women's event (6.30pm).

Diving competitions start over in Edinburgh with former world junior champion Jack Laugher commencing his double medal bid in the 1m springboard (prelims 10m, final 6pm) while European champions Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow are in action in the 10m synchronised.

The big guns go in the weightlifting, with men's 105kg event scheduled for 7.30pm and there are five medals for for grabs at the wrestling, with Leon Rattigan looking to follow the lead of wife Yana, who won 48kg silver, in men's 97kg.

Scotland’s women play England in the hockey group stage (9am) and action continues in badminton, boxing, lawn bowls, squash and table tennis. England also play their group stage netball match against Barbados at 7pm.
