GB sailor Sign targets improvements and a repeat in Hyeres

European champion Alain Sign has his sights set on improvement – and a repeat – as he and Dylan Fletcher gear up for next week’s Hyeres ISAF Sailing World Cup.

Sign and Fletcher, who won the European 49er title in Denmark last year, travel to the south of France having won the exact same regatta 12 months ago for their first World Cup gold.

They claimed bronze at the penultimate World Cup round in Mallorca last time out earlier this month and will be joined in Hyeres by six other British 49er crews.

And Sign is adamant he and Fletcher will be a far different pairing in Hyeres than they were in Mallorca – now back fit and better prepared for the defence of their title.

“We were pretty happy with the outcome, but it felt for us like we hadn’t been sailing at our best – I reckon there’s still more to come,” said Sign.

“I’d been ill halfway through the week, and in the medal race we were doing all the right things up the beat and threw it all away downwind.

“So we’ve had a few work-ons ahead of Hyeres and hopefully they’ll come through for next time.”
