Brownlee upgrades Rio silver with victory in World Triathlon Series

Olympic silver medallist Jonny Brownlee proved untouchable as he powered to a spectacular World Triathlon Series victory in Edmonton.

In chilly conditions, Brownlee established himself in a three-strong breakaway on the bike and then struck out alone on the three kilometre run.

To underline his dominance, he even started to lap some rivals, even more remarkable in a sprint distance triathlon.

Overall World Series leader, Spain's Mario Mola, battled to second place, which could be crucial ahead of the Grand Final in Mexico, where Brownlee has an outside chance of winning the world title for the second time.

“The Olympic medal can be a bit of a handicap, everyone was after me,” he said. "I worked really hard for that but I felt I was getting better during that run.

“I’m not sure about my overall chances. If Mario has a good race in Mexico then he’s won. This is a really good result but I’m realistic, I'm not sure much has changed in the overall standings, with him coming second."

Mola finished just ahead of South Africa’s Richard Murray while Great Britain’s Grant Sheldon just tipped team-mate Tom Bishop for fourth.

British Olympic bronze medallist Vicky Holland ranked fifth in the women’s race while Non Stanford, fourth in Rio, came home seventh.

American Summer Cook won her first ever World Series race ahead of US team-mates Sarah True and Katie Zaferes.
