Brownlee surges to World Cup silver

Jonny Brownlee powered to silver at the Triathlon World Cup race in Lausanne and admits he loved every second as he continued to step up his recovery bid.

The double Olympic medallist has missed much of the 2018 season through injury and was left out of the Great Britain squad that competed at the European Championships to work on his fitness.

And that paid off handsomely in Lausanne as he finished strongly to take second, sandwiched between Norway’s Gustav Iden and Kristian Blummenfelt – with Iden going on to win gold in 1h49m48s.

Brownlee was 31 seconds behind but he looked sharp when outsprinting Blummenfelt to the line.

“I came here to win and to enjoy racing again, and I certainly enjoyed it,” Brownlee said.

“I felt good in the run, I thought Kristian was going to go hard but then I saw another Norwegian passing and I thought 'oh, here we go'. but I had fun, and really enjoyed it.

“There were attacks, tactics, tough hills and that's what we are here for.”

In the women’s race, Lucy Hall was the highest finishing Brit in 19th while Olivia Mathias was 26th.
