Brownlee brothers storm to joint Abu Dhabi victory

Alistair and Jonny Brownlee opted to share victory in the Abu Dhabi triathlon, crossing the line arm-in-arm to set a new joint course record.

The brothers were competing in Abu Dhabi as they look to step up preparations for the start of the World Triathlon Series which starts in Auckland in three weeks time.

And they showed they are in good shape ahead of the season opener with strong stints in the 1.5km swim and 100km bike ride giving them a five-minute lead ahead of the final 10km run.

Alistair, who won gold in London 2012, was looking to defend the title he won in the same event last year, while 2012 world champion Jonny was competing for the first time.

But brandishing the Yorkshire flag, the pair decided to cross the line together for joint victory in an overall time of 3:12.51 hours, while fellow Brit Georgie Rutherford was fifth in the women’s event.

The race saw the cycling section take place on the Formula 1 Yas Marina Circuit for the first time and younger sibling Jonny admitted it had been good to share the experience with his brother.

“We have finished like that lots of times,” he said.  “In domestic races we have. Once in 2011 in Madrid in one of the world series races we did it for the first time.

“Alistair dropped me that time and then waited for me. So we’ve done it a few times.

“I haven’t been away training. We went to Spain for a little bit but we’ve been in Yorkshire where it’s minus-something so it’s completely different from here.

"It got pretty hot towards the end and I poured lots of water on my head at that point. It’s a good way to train you differently in the winter."
