Peter Charles competed at both Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 for Ireland, qualifying through his Irish mother, and his individual European gold in 1995 was the nation’s first ever.
Charles originally represented Britain and switched back in 2007. He had a serious fall in 2006, rupturing his spinal sheath, shattering three ribs and suffering a broken vertebrae.
At the 2012 Olympics in London, Charles won gold in Team Jumping with partners Ben Maher, Scott Brash and Nick Skelton.
