At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games James Goddard swam in the individual medley and finished sixth. At the 2009 World Long Course Championships in Rome, Goddard finished sixth in the I.M. At the British Championships Goddard won gold in the 200 I.M, silver in the 200m backstroke and bronze in the 400 I.M. Goddard made his Great Britain debut in 2000 and his Olympic debut in 2004 at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. He won his 200m backstroke semi final, but finished an agonising fourth place in the final, 0.2 sec off medals. He went on to retain his Commonwealth title at the same distance in 2006. Goddard is currently the 200 I.M British record holder. He will compete in just the one event in London after a shoulder injury – and a schedule clash – forced him to opt out of the 200m backstroke. He is an avid Manchester City FC fan and his daughter Evie was born just before the Beijing Olympics in May 2008.
