Christian reached the 200m Final in Sydney where he came 5th. Although a talented footballer as a youngster, he followed cousin Kevin Williams, a Welsh international sprinter, into athletics and enjoyed a successful junior career. He was 1997 European Junior Champion at 200m and also took gold in the 4x100m. At the Commonwealth Games he blasted to the silver medal in 20.29, a European junior and Welsh senior record. Come Olympic year in 2000 he enjoyed an excellent indoor season with a Welsh record of 20.54 to take the European title. Outdoors he won the European Cup 200m and then ran consistently well at the Olympics, to take fifth. 2001 saw Malcolm taking silver in the World Indoors and he doubled up at the Worlds in the summer, having taken medals in both the 100m and 200m at the AAA Championships. He made both finals in Edmonton and came away with PBs in both events, although a faulty wind gauge when he ran 10.09 in the 100m quarter-finals meant his 10.11 in the final went down as his official best. His 20.08 in the 200 semi-final suggested a sub-20 was within reach but we are still waiting. The European Indoors in 2002 once again saw Malcolm on the podium with a silver that was so nearly gold, and his relay victories that year included the European Cup and Euro Championships. In 2003 he won the London Grand Prix but then had a disappointing World Championships in Paris when he surprisingly failed to make the final. He went out in the 200m semi finals in Athens. He celebrates his races with a packet of jelly tots.
