Wright victorious at new Champions Sailing Cup; Shaw second

Former world champion Ed Wright created history by becoming the first Brit to claim victory in the new EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup Series in Riva del Garda.

Wright, who won world gold in 2010, finished first and third in the final Finn races to beat Croatian Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic into first place by one point in Italy.

However fellow Brit Bryony Shaw suffered the opposite fate in the final women’s RS:X races as she missed out on victory in the regatta to Flavia Tartaglini.

Shaw finished first ahead of the Italian in second in the first of the two final races but was then third to Tartaglini’s first to miss out on winning like Wright by a single point.

Fellow British windsurfer Izzy Hamilton joined Shaw in the final series of races in Riva del Garda and placed fifth with a fourth and a sixth.

Meanwhile Elliot Carney was also fifth in the men’s RS:X with fellow Brit Tom Squires sixth.
